For the love of little toes…

December 20, 2007

Can we get any cuter? Why no, I don’t believe we can…

Here are some toddler sized Twinkletoes knit in a worsted weight wool; the colourway is “Goodnight Moon” and was leftover from E’s Pinwheel Sweater. The girl is stylin’.

And the first of a set of twinnie Flakey Baby Socks  — which mark my second-ever project involving stranded colourwork, and my first ever sock. So I think I did pretty good all things considered…modest as always…yes…

Self-Striping Dyeing Play-by-Play

December 14, 2007

I decided to document my first attempt at dyeing self-striping wool. It was fun. It took for-freakin’-ever, so I’m very grateful I had the common sense to choose a small project — one of the Three Tams — so it was a sane yarn amount to dye up…only 50g/approx 112yds, and it still took an hour.

And was totally worth it. I’m calling the colourway “Self-Portrait” because if I were yarn…this would be me.

Grab some popcorn and a cold one, and enjoy!

Found my way out…

…of the endless wonders that is Ravelry …

’nuff said, right?

Am loving it over there! Entirely too addictive.  And definitely not good for my blogging habits!

To make up for it, here’s a wee taste of some of what I’ve made in the last month.

Behold, Dread Pirate Monkeybuns. Despite a peg leg, hook and fierce sunburn, this wee pirate manages to Argh and growl his way into your (or at least my!) heart.

And here’s my dear daughter’s Pinwheel sweater…the wool was dyed by me. I was attempting for the colours in the children’s storybook, “Goodnight Moon” but they came out a bit lighter than I wanted.  Oh well! :) I used a crochet cast-off and did a row of crab stitch around the edges instead of the loopy edging.

“Decadence” Soakies

September 3, 2007

Remember my Kettle Dyeing Play-by-Play? It came out looking like this   and I decided to call it “Decadence” because it brings to mind life’s little luxuries things like rich chocolate, red wine, or a really great cup of coffee.

Anyway, here is what it looks like all knit up:

Finally, an FO! (And a little yarn porn, too.)

August 22, 2007

After my month-long drought of FO’s, I’m pleased to share this little skirty that I made for a customer and fellow mom of multiples…she sent me the yarn, called “Dandelions” from Midnight Spectrum. BFL, and quite yummy!

The body is a knit using my soaker/shorties pattern, and the skirt is hooked up. The stitch pattern was something I have in thread on a sweater, and I love how it translated to the worsted weight.

Enough blabbing! Here’s the pics:

The Skirty:

And, finally, the yarn porn. Kettle-dyed by me, shades of crimson, golden ochre and yellow marbled to create what I’m calling “Firebird”. BFL.

It’s making me hungry…

August 4, 2007

…here’s a pic of the wool I dyed during my “play by play” slideshow.

It’s inspiring all sorts of cravings for chocolate covered strawberries…or maybe some dark chocolate and a nice wine…

I truly love the softness and sheen of BFL… amazing wool.

Late-night yarn buzz…

August 3, 2007

OK, so it’s only 10pm. But when you’ve got four kids ages 5 and under — anything past 9pm is officially “late”. Just FYI.

I’m on a double-yarn high tonight…have a 4oz skein of freshly dyed BFL rinsing in the sink and I am positively giddy about how the colours came out — a yummy red, chocolate brown, and black.

My friend Irene requested that I take step-by-step pictures during the kettle-dyeing process — I’ll post those tomorrow. It’s an amazing thrill to me to watch the initial pools of colour slowly evolve into something beautiful as the kettle heats the yarn. And it’s always a relief when it doesn’t end up a big muddy mess.

The other half of my yarn high is from a pair of longies I’m knitting up for Laura. I’m calling that colourway “Oceanic” and the blues and soft green are so soothing. I’m quite pleased with how it’s knitting up — a nice mix of colour, no pooling — the skeins took colour differently so I am switching between the two. Going to be a lot of loose ends to weave in on those longies! :) But there is something immensely rewarding about seeing the longies start to evolve out of yarn that I dyed myself…there’s a lot of love that goes into these projects.

And now I need to go hang up the yarn to dry…then it’s off to sleep to dream of yarn.

What, doesn’t everybody?
